The Fallows
Last week, I blogged Deborah Fallows's a week long journal talking about her stay in Shanghai. I have to say I enjoyed it. The Shanghai she saw and felt about is very close to what my experienced this summer. Even though some of the tips she gave out in her journal still seems quite Laowai to me. Yet after spending almost 6 years in Canada, inevitably, my perspective on my homeland has been changing in a way closer and closer towards westerns' point of view. I am not sure whether it means I am losing my identity as a native Chinese or not. But one thing for sure, I am still struggling with this change inside me.
Back to the Fallows, when the wife's job is done, it's the husband's turn now.

I am still on page 1. So far, so good.

I blog this for Yuri, even though she never checks my blog.
From the Torontoist:
If, as Geoffrey James claimed, Toronto is a "jolie laide" (a pretty, ugly woman), then we've got a photo exhibit that might just epitomize our city.
As part of a year-long photography showcase with new artists each month, the photos of our own Carrie Musgrave and blogTO's Jerrold Litwinenko are being featured in an exhibit called Pretty/Ugly. The whole idea, as the two explain it, is to "get people to see beauty in the mundane things we usually overlook."
The exhibit runs from November 25th to January 5th at Le Petit Dejeuner (191 King St. E.), and there's an opening night party at 7 pm at the same location.
And for those who have been curious about Yuri's upcoming exhibition, yes, it is coming, but definitely not going to happen in 2006 anymore. Probably in April 2007. Good thing is the gallery has confirmed they would take her as she would be the youngest photographer to exhibit there. Apparently it is a prestigious gallery in photography field according to Yuri's reaction to the confirmation call from her teacher who had his exhibition at the same venue last year. So, anyway, sometime in April, mark you calendar, if you have one for 2007 yet.

instant blogging
As you read a good book and you will take notes of it, I come across something inspiring me online, I'd blog them here. My blog becomes my multi-media notebook.
A Troubled River Mirrors China’s Path to Modernity
I'd add this one here since the topic of both articles falls in the same catagory.
The Rising Dragon’s Environmental Disaster
Be honest, the courage it takes from me to read this type of article which lays out all these environmental facts of China is almost equivalent to it takes me to watch those thriller or horror movies which I never attempt to. Nevertheless, fact is fact, no matter I accept it or not.

good one, the interviewee, not the interviewer, heh
I upgraded my flickr account to pro account last night and added some pictures there which I didn't post here. I really like their interface, very user friendly.

enough! fed up with this dull tone in my pictures. where did the bright, the vivid go? this is not me. i wear orange heels and carry red purse.
no comment
For the whole past week, everyday, I opened my google personalized home page and Ctrl ^F. Find window poped up, keyed in "Harper, China, Human Rights, Meeting", BONG(this is chinese), there must be at least one match on the page among those news headlines. Well, I am not going to make any comment on this diplomatic affair since it is somewhat related to the "important Canadian values the belief in democracy, freedom, human rights" quoted Mr Harper.
In Beijing, a human rights exhibition, the first of its kind, is going on from November 17-26. I learned of this exhibition from Shanghaiist this morning. From the People's Daily Online:
Human Rights in China exhibition to open in Beijing
An exhibition on Human Rights in China will be held between November 17 and November 26 at the Beijing Cultural Palace for Nationalities.
This is the first human rights themed exhibition.
The exhibition will showcase China's achievements in regards to human rights. It will help to advocate scientific development and the construction of a harmonious society and world. It will also promote the development of China's human rights record and exchange and cooperation on international human rights issues.
This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the launch of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. It also marks the fifteenth anniversary of the white paper on the Human Rights Situation in China.

I changed my mind. no comment.

tonight we can truly say, together we are invincible

when a yellow bug was chasing after a grey rabbit

eyes and mind were disconnected. fog erased all the objects. only light survived. i travelled in the space. the smell of the sweetness was no longer there. under the bridge, light left its mark everywhere.Wednesday, November 15, 2006
A week-long journal about a westerner's stay in Shanghai
I am having a very easy time at work this week since none of the bosses is around. Woohooo~~ The unbearable lightness of being? hehehe, I keep myself busy with actively browsing online. At the same time, I found it is not very easy to coordinate this type of slackness in my cubic. Since the door (if you can call it a door) is behine me and I always have my headsets on, I have to constantly turn back to check there is nobody either trying to scare me or just standing there and watching me. For the latter one, I assume they were simply doing that for curiosity reason cause they think I am too quiet sometimes and it concerns them from a good will.
Anyway, this is what I found this morning:
A weeklong electronic journal - Deborah Fallows At Home in Shanghai
Deborah Fallows is writing this for Slate. Be honest, I don't know who she is. All I am interested in is how she is going to write about Shanghai. Generally I consider myself kinda cynical as how I judge on the way western media covers China. The stereotype irritates me. You can say it is the nationalism or the brain wash by the communist propaganda blind me from the truth. Nevertheless, I'd like to see how I will take on this journal. I haven't actually read it yet and it has only been two entries so far. Well, we will see.

what is the order of the issues we are facing?
I randomly saw this news today. The main content of it seems a bit hilarious yet ridiculous to me. Anyhow the following part caught my attention.
"As part of the announcement made yesterday at Union Station, GO Transit won $5.3 million and Union Station $4.3 million. The two-year contribution program, announced this summer, is supposed to assist passenger rail and urban transit operators better defend against terrorism threats.
The money makes up just one round of funding in Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon’s plan to award $80 million to prevent the kind of transit system bombings seen in London and Madrid. This first round of money should pay for risk assessment studies, employee training programs and the upgrade of security equipment such as cameras and lighting."
Are we really living in a world threatened by the terrorists so badly as we have to spend 80 million dollars to equip the transit system to defend ourselves? Isn't there any better way to spend the money on some other issues which deserve the higher priorities? How many of us do actually appreciate the fact that we will have a safer ride tomorrow with the assist of this fund while our kids, grandkids might not have an earth to live on, say, in 100 years? I am lost now. I hope it is my language barrier which takes me to the wrong direction to understand this news, otherwise, the world we are living in is out of order.
Here is the link to the news: Ottawa 'spits in the eye' of TTC. Please tell me my English sucks and I read it wrong.
On my way home, by realizing the fact that I am a tax payer in this country, I wonder, does it mean actually I contribute to this allocation? Then the next question I ask myself, do I still want to immigrate to this country which seems like on its way to become another US?

Somehow, in China, 11.11 is a holiday for the singles. Cheers!
I vented all my words to yuri today, left here for the pictures.
Friday night out with my dear CIS fellows

At Milestone, we drank, ate, had a nice chat and stole the 5th hoegaarden glass.

Coincidently, 4 out of 5 of us were wearing blazers. I guess we are all grown-ups now. How many of Az's face you can see in the picture? I saw at least 4.

Spinning white ball and a twisted face.

(left) Glad the under exposure didn't ruin the perfect pose. Unless it is necessary, I won't let PS alter the decisive moment. You might need to adjust the brightness of your monitor thought. lol

moving images

(Left) Parallel shooting
(Right) I purposedly turned on flash to shoot this picture and where was Tony staring at? Apparently, the punishment from the camera is red eye!

(Middle) Shall I consider myself lucky as two hot asses were shaking in front of me?

Just to prove my existence in that room and show off my new boots
With yuri's company, it is always a good time. My art hunting Saturday

To a hopeless believer like me, no matter what happens, love never sucks.

I wish the elevator at Gladstone can be my rat hole.

Snapshots at the coffee shop

The shadow on the wall can be a piece of art.

Sadly, there is only one this kind of monkey in Canada. And This particular monkey is too old to be on Telus's commercial now. So they went to Japan and rent some younger one for the new commercials. Yuri said the one in this picture was the new one and she thought it was not as cute as the previous one cause it didn't look like Gori anymore. I couldn't tell the difference at all. It costs about 3000 dollars to rent this monkey for one day.
***************************************************
If I am dying and there is only 10 days left in my life, what would be on the list of the things I want to do before I close my eyes. Kissing someone will be on the top of my list. I kissed Bart before I went to bed the other night and it made me realize how terribly I missed it, kissing someone while feeling my heart pounding against my chest. Well, I guess I forgot to vent this to yuri today, maybe because of the abensence of the alcohol in my vessles which is flooding at this moment.

the end of the weekend
We think in generalities, but we live in detail.
- Alfred North Whitehead

Along the Saturday morning walk, I discovered the happiness I have been long for from the bottom of my heart with the sole presence of myself. The shower of sunshine warmed me inside out. I let my shadow lead me the way.

A book I found in the section called Awesome in a book store I like on Roncesvalles. I got it for Mariko as a gift. Hope it can help her go through the perplexity she is facing right now.

Enjoying the caster this third Kubota I've met brought me from Japan. When we realized our last meeting was 5 years ago, our conversation paused for 30 seconds. I was 21 and she was still in her late 20s.
Downstairs of my apartment, on the first floor, lives a lady by herself. She is probably in her 40s or maybe 50s. Most of the time, she doesn't stay here. The rooms are always dark and you cannot hear any sound in there. Today, on my way to pick up my laundry, I saw the light in that room was on. Of course, I peeked from the window. There she was, sitting in the armchair, reading. Next to her, was the light, an antique lamp. It was the same quiet in there. I could hear nothing. It is a well decorated room, with the paintings hanging on the wall, the sculptures displaying on the shelf. 1 minute later, while I was climbing up the stairs with the laundry basket under my arm, I was wondering, is that the future I will end up with living in. An elegant apartment with me and myself. It scared me.

early morning thoughts, quoted from a comic
There must a lot of you ask yourselves the following questions all the time. At least I did occasionally.
"Why isn't my life like this situation comedy?"
"Why don't I have a bunch of friends with nothing to do but drop by and instigate wacky adventures?"
"Why ain't my conversations peppered with spontaneous witticisms?"
"Why don't my friends domonstrate heartfelt concern for my well-being when I have problems?"
"Why don't you know any gorgeous babes?" - I got this one all the time from my fellow cis guys.
In the comic, this is the conclusion - "I gotta get my life some writers."
